Polishing Marble Explained

Let's start by talking about how marble gets it's shiny polished surface. Polished marble is achieved by physically polishing the marble's surface from its natural shape and texture (which is usually very rough) to a very beautiful smooth and shiny surface.

In most cases this is done far before your see the beautiful stone in the show room by huge industrial machines that polish the entire marble slab with diamond covered polishing pads.

It is important to note that marble does not get its polished shiny surface from treatments of oils or polishes (it is not like polishing silver before your christmas dinner), it gets it from physically polishing the surface from a rough natural surface to a surface as smooth as glass.

Honed Marble VS Finished Marble

Honed finish usually involves chafing of silicon carbide or diamond particles to get rid of any trace of scratches and then removing a certain amount of deep-seated soil on the stone. This kind of finish leaves the marble surface with a matte, less-glossy but softer and more natural look.

Polished finish, as the name suggests, involves a series of polishing by the stone polishing machine. This process transforms the marble from the rough abrasive pads to the fine diamond impregnated ones with the mirror-like shininess and fascinating radiant look.
