How to Install & Grout Slate Tile

Does slate tile break easily?

Unlike ceramic tile or other natural stone, slate is delicate during the installation process. The tile is brittle, which makes installation difficult, and the subflooring must be perfectly prepared to prevent any cracking or breaking.

Dry-Install the Slate Tile

Measure the distance from one side of the room to the other and divide the number in half. For example, if the room is 24 feet wide, divide that in half to arrive at 12 feet. This is the center-line measurement.

Measure from one end of the most prominent wall to the center of the floor -- using the center-line calculation -- and make a pencil mark. Do the same thing from the other end of the same wall. The most prominent wall is usually the longest wall or the wall most visible when entering the room.

3:Snap a chalk line between the two marks. This is your center guideline, and it should be parallel to the most prominent wall. Snap another chalk line in the center of the room, perpendicular to the first line.

4: Dry-install the tiles. Dry installing involves laying the tiles in place, using the intersecting lines as guides, and putting spacers between the tiles just as you would during the actual installation. The reason for dry installing is to obtain the correct measurements for the edge tiles.

5: Lay the slate tiles in place from the center guidelines outward. When you reach the edges of the floor, measure and cut each edge tile on a wet tile saw. This type of saw is available from construction rental stores. When you're done with the dry-install, you'll see exactly how the finished floor pattern will look.

6:Start at one corner and remove the edge tiles, numbering each one on the back with a pencil and writing a corresponding number just above each tile on the wall. This allows you to quickly fit the correct tile in the right spot during installation.

7: Stack the cut and numbered edge tiles in order by each wall, and stack the rest of the whole tiles out of the way.
