Consideration of Choosing Terrazzo Stone Tiles

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING TERRAZZO FLOORING? 

Terrazzo is a composite construction material made by combining chips of aggregates such as marble or stone with either concrete or epoxy resin. Depending on the types of materials used, terrazzo can be used both indoors and outdoors. Terrazzo is either poured (like concrete) in situ (i.e. in your home) or you can use terrazzo tiles instead.

The first choice you’d need to make in choosing terrazzo for your floor is whether you want the look of poured or tile. Some people like the uniform, flat, one-piece look of a poured terrazzo floor. Again, it likes having a concrete floor but is a lot more decorative. Others like the structured and patterned look that tiles and grout lines provide.

You first need to decide what look you want and the size of the floor. Terrazzo comes in cement or resin format tiles or a poured floor. Each of the options has pros and cons. Poured floors are really only for commercial projects and large areas. Cement terrazzo floor tiles are 30mm to 40mm thick depending on the size of the chippings, so the substrate has to be able to take the weight. Resin terrazzo tiles are only 10mm thick so can be used in more areas including upstairs. Resin floors do not need sealing but it is recommended a sealant is used to assist with maintenance.
