Stone Carving Process

In ancient China, traditional stone carvings were designed by stone carvers themselves (often drafts) and carved independently. So far, many stone carving artists still use this method. However, with the rise of urban sculptures in my country, sculptors directly participated in the design and model production of some large and medium-sized stone sculptures, and then processed and produced by the stone sculpture masters of the factory. The requirements of urban carving crafts and carving skills are relatively high, and the carving process is roughly divided into three steps: wasteland reclamation, thinning and polishing. The following is a detailed introduction.

1. Reclamation of wasteland is also called "open wasteland", where the excess parts of historical materials are chipped off until the beginning of a rough outline. The process of further drawing out the basic shape of the relationship between body and face is called "opening the wasteland". Generally, it is called "open small wasteland" when it is processed to be about 1 cm thick from the plaster model. The three processes are sometimes alternated, and the tools used are large, medium, and small chisel.

2. Sliming Sliming is to chip away the remaining redundant part of "Opening the Little Wasteland", focusing on portraying the image and identifying subtle changes in the undulating structure of the body. Fine stone is an important stage of artistic processing of stone statues. The tools used are tooth chisel, flat chisel, stone setback, etc., which requires patience and fine carving.

3. Polishing Polishing is based on the fine stone carving. It is polished and polished with grinding tools to show the texture of the stone, adding the brilliance of the stone carving and improving its artistic appeal. Polishing tools and materials include polishing machine, sandpaper, grinding wheel, polishing paste, etc. This process is performed according to the needs of artistic effects, sometimes the whole body is polished, and sometimes the part is polished.
